BHLP

BHLP stands for the Blue Hen Leadership Program. This is a four-tiered program designed to spread leadership knowledge to its students through workshops, internships, reflections, and service. Below you will find brief descriptions of each tier. You can find my personal experience in each tier in the drop down tabs at the top.

Tier 1 is all about personal leadership. In tier 1 you learn about the 5 practices of exemplary leadership, true colors, personal leadership styles, core values, and goal setting through various workshops. At the end of the year, Tier 1 members are expected to present a poster summarizing their experience.

Tier 2 focuses primarily on group leadership and what it takes to work as an effective team. Some topics covered in tier 2 include strengths, saboteurs, the social change model of leadership,  and the five dysfunctions of a team. In addition to these topics, members of tier 2 are put into groups of 3-5 to intern for a non-profit and work on a year-long project to help further their mission.

Tier 3 is taken as a class, LEAD340 and can be taken for 1-3 credits in the fall. Areas discussed include community leadership, non-profit management, and the connection between social innovation and leadership. Students in this tier work in groups and intern with a non-profit of their choosing to create and assess a SWOT analysis. From this analysis, students propose projects and once approved, create, implement, and assess it.

Tier 4 prepares students to transition to the next phase whether that be full-time employment, grad school, or some other route. Mock interviews, resume reviews, and e-portfolios are completed over the year to allow students to reflect on their leadership journey and help them synthesize, summarize, and articulate these leadership experiences.
